How To Use the File Explorer Tool in the Hosted Environment
Getting to grips with the File Explorer Tool in the Hosted Environment
BEFORE YOU START:
The quickest way to upload files into the Hosted Environment is to use the copy-and-paste method. This method is especially recommended if you're uploading a large file (approx. 20MB or larger), or you have tried to upload the file using the File Explorer Tool and got an error. Click here for a guide to using the Copy-and-Paste Upload Method.
Downloading Files from the Z-Drive using File Explorer
Uploading Files to the Z-Drive using File Explorer
To make it more intuitive to navigate and manage files on your Hosted Z Drive, we have launched the File Explorer app. This lets you upload files to your cloud-based Z: Drive provided by Beck Technology, or download files from the Z Drive to your local computer via a simple user interface. Here are the steps to using the File Explorer app.
You will find the File Explorer app in your Windows App or Remote Desktop dashboard next to Estimator:

Remote Desktop:
The File Explorer offers the ability to create new folders, delete a file/folder, upload a file/folder from your local computer, and download a file/folder to your local computer.
List of Functions:
- BACK - Use this button to go back to the previous folder.
- NEW FOLDER - Click to create a new folder inside of the currently displayed directory. Since folders cannot be moved in the File Explorer tool, you should navigate to the location where you want the folder to be created before creating it.
- DELETE - Highlight a file or folder and click this button to delete it.
- UPLOAD - Click to upload a file or folder. After clicking this button, you need to choose 'upload files' to upload a file, and 'upload folder' to upload a folder. IMPORTANT: See below for a guide to navigating to your local PC files and folders.
- DOWNLOAD - Click to download the highlighted file or folder to your local PC or share drive. IMPORTANT: See below for a guide to navigating to your local PC files and folders.
NOTE: It is possible to upload multiple files via the 'upload files' option by simply highlighting multiple files and clicking on 'Open'.
WARNING – ‘Drag and drop’ from a local File Explorer window into the Explorer tool does not work. You must use the Upload option to move files/folders from local into the hosted environment.
Navigating to Your Local PC Files and Folders
When uploading or downloading files in the File Explorer tool, the most important thing to know is that the Explorer window will show 'Quick access' folders for Desktop, Documents, Downloads and others that are on the Virtual Machine (VM) in the BECK Hosted Environment - these are NOT the folders of your local PC. To access your local computer from the File Explorer tool, follow these steps:
1. When you click the Upload button to open an Explorer window, click on the 'This PC' directory on the left. After a short load time, you will see your Local C drive (called 'C on YOURCOMPUTERNAME') and other Shared drive access locations:
2. Click on the option that says 'C on YOURCOMPUTERNAME' and then go into the 'Users' folder.
3. Select the folder with your name.
4. You will now see your local files and folders - Documents, Downloads, and such - to navigate through as necessary.
Tip: If you are moving a large file to the Z: Drive (such as large PDF plans), you may experience long upload times using the File Explorer tool. For moving large files, there is an alternative "cut-and-paste" method that allows for faster transfer speeds. See the article below:
