How Changing Resource Group Composition Affects Productivity in Estimator

With the release of Estimator version 2026.0.0.2 in February 2026, we made a significant update to the way resource groups recalculate productivity when a user adjusts the group's composition.

Summary: Adjusting Staff Updates Productivity

In a nutshell, adjusting a resource group's composition now updates the crew's overall productivity while keeping individual unit labor rates constant. This should prove more intuitive to users since the amount of work that a particular person can do should not be inherently impacted by the size of the crew.

The individual efficiency metrics, such as units per man-hour (Unit/MH) and man-hours per unit (MH/Unit), do not change when crew size is modified. Thus, when crew composition changes, the quantity (output per hour) is updated, while the time (man-hours per unit) remains consistent.

Example

In the below resource group, we have a quantity of one for each of the resources:

When this resource group is applied to a line item with a crew productivity of 100sf per hour,  it has a current Unit/MH of 25, and MH/Unit of .04, as shown below:

Now, we will change the resource group composition to include 5 Lab-01 resources instead of 1.

The Cost Information View reflects this update with a recalculated productivity rate of 200sf per hour, while the Unit/MH and MH/Unit remain the same.

Regardless of whether productivity is expressed as time/qty or qty/time, the quantity value is what will be adjusted when escalating, de‑escalating, or changing crew composition.
