Workpack: Unit Systems

Workpack allows users to switch between imperial (inches, feet and miles) and metric (centimeters, meters and kilometers) units of measure. For example:

Three Levels of Unit System Settings

Unit system settings can be set at three levels:

  • At the account level - A global setting affecting all newly created projects (does not convert existing projects).
  • At the project level - Allows for a project to use a different unit system than that chosen at the account level (does not affect existing documents).
  • At the document level - Lets you pick a unit system for a specific document, and performs the necessary conversions.

At the Account Level:

Selecting your preferred unit system at an account level will unsure that all newly created projects will default to that unit system. Note that changing this setting does not affect existing projects or documents - they will remain unchanged.

To set your preferred unit system at a global/account level:

  • In the upper right of the Dashboard screen, click on your email, and then click Profile:

  • On the Account page, navigate down to the Preferences pane. You will see the Preferred unit system option where you can select Imperial or Metric options. Note that the default setting is imperial.

  • Click Save.

At the Project Level:

If you want to create a project in a different unit system from default preferred system, you will need to make this change at the project level.

Please note that changing the unit system on an existing Project will only affect newly added documents - existing documents in the Project will remain unchanged.

  • The Project-level unit system can be chosen at project creation on the Create Project window:

Additionally, the unit system can be changed for existing projects via the following steps:

  • On the Projects dashboard, locate the relevant project and click the edit icon:

  • Select the unit system. Please note that this change will only affect new documents added to the project after this setting is in place. Documents added before the change will not be converted.

At the Document Level:

As noted above, changing your unit system settings at the account or project level does not affect existing documents. If you want to view an existing document in a different unit system, you can perform this conversion by setting the unit system setting at the document level.
  • Open the relevant document to go to the Takeoff screen. From there, click on the hamburger menu in the top right corner, then click on Measurement Units:

Select the measure system you desire for this document only:

Note that you can change this measurement system setting at any time and all values in the UI get recalculated right on confirmation of this dialog

  • The Conversion between two systems is not exact. For example, we have 3/16’’=1’-0’’ before switching unit system settings. After the switch, it will become 1:75, however, the exact value is 1:64. So, all measurement values will become 17% greater in metric than they were in imperial units. To preserve the correct values, we need to set a custom scale of 1:64.

Here’s a conversion chart:

Imperial Imperial to Metric exact Metric closest
3''=1' 1:4 1:5
3/2''=1' 1:8 1:10
1''=1' 1:12 1:10
3/4''=1' 1:16 1:15
3/5''=1' 1:20 1:15
1/2''=1' 1:24 1:25
3/8''=1' 1:32 1:25
3/10''=1' 1:40 1:50
1/4''=1' 1:48 1:50
3/16''=1' 1:64 1:75
1/8''=1' 1:96 1:100
3/32''=1' 1:128 1:125
1/16''=1' 1:192 1:200
3/64''=1' 1:256 1:200
1/32''=1' 1:384 1:400
1/64''=1' 1:768 1:750
  • Set the custom scale:

Left Panel:

  • Items in the Left Panel show measurement values for group and object items, all according to the type: walls and linear measurements show length, while rooms and other area types show area.

  • Upon switching unit system, measurement values will recalculate from meters or square meters to the feet or square feet and backwards according to the changed scale.
